This page is a checklist for new Weston residents. It links to our guides instead of repeating them, and adds what they leave out: where to start each utility, how to switch your license and tag, and the homestead deadline.

The first five calls

  • Water and sewer (starts trash too): City of Sunrise Utilities, 954-746-3232
  • Electricity: FPL, start service online or 954-797-5000
  • Emergency alerts: register for ALERT Weston

  • City Hall: 954-385-2000; see who to call

Water, sewer and trash

Weston buys its water from the City of Sunrise Utilities Department, which opens and bills every water account. To start service, call 954-746-3232 or apply in person at the New River Civic Center, 60 Weston Road, Sunrise (behind Westgate Square, one block south of State Road 84), weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The city says to bring your executed settlement statement and a driver’s license or photo ID; a deposit is required. Pay bills at sunrisefl.gov/payments.

Opening the water account starts garbage and recycling automatically: Republic Services delivers a garbage cart and a recycling cart, and the fees go on your property tax bill. See trash and recycling for your pickup days.

Problems with the pipes, not the bill, go to Weston Public Works, 954-385-2600, except in Bonaventure, where the City of Sunrise handles service (after hours 954-888-6087). See power outages.

The city says several cable providers serve Weston and that some homeowners associations contract for cable, so ask your HOA or property manager before you sign up. Weston Government TV, with City Commission meetings, is on Blue Stream channel 25, Comcast channel 78 and AT&T U-verse channel 99. Gas service reaches only some areas, the city notes; ask Peoples Gas whether your address is served.

Driver’s license and car tag

  • Driver’s license: the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles handles license transfers; see its new Florida residents page. The city lists the nearest state driver’s license office at 8001 Pembroke Road, Pembroke Pines (University Drive and Pembroke Road), 954-497-1570.
  • Tag and title: new residents can register and title a vehicle at any Broward County tag agency. The city lists a private tag agency in Weston at 16660 Saddle Club Road, 954-745-4697, which may charge extra fees and takes cash or check only. Every location is on the state’s Broward County office list and the Broward County Tax Collector’s locations page.

Property taxes and homestead

If you own the home and it is your permanent residence on Jan. 1, you can claim a homestead exemption, which lowers your taxable value and caps future increases in assessed value. File with the Broward County Property Appraiser by March 1 for that year; the 2027 deadline is March 1, 2027. A purchase resets the assessed value, so do not budget on the seller’s tax bill. Everything else is in our property taxes guide.

Permits before you renovate

Structural, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and gas work in Weston needs a permit; a new state exemption covers some other work under $7,500. If you are in an HOA, its approval is a separate step. See building permits and zoning.

Pets

Broward County requires every dog and cat to have a rabies vaccination and a Broward County rabies registration tag, and dogs must be leashed or fenced when outside. Details: Broward County Animal Care, 954-359-1313. The “register a pet” link on the city’s website sends residents to Broward County Animal Care.

Voting, schools and more

  • Register to vote at your new address through the Broward Supervisor of Elections; see voting.
  • Enroll your children at your zoned school; see schools.
  • Passports: the Broward County Clerk’s West Regional Courthouse, 100 N. Pine Island Road, Plantation, 954-831-6565, is a passport acceptance office.
  • Library card: Weston Branch Library, 4205 Bonaventure Blvd., 954-357-5420.
  • Flood insurance: Weston is in the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System at Class 6, which the city says gives a 20% discount on NFIP policies in Special Flood Hazard Areas.
