Electricity in Weston comes from Florida Power & Light (FPL), the city’s new-resident guide says. Outages, downed lines and power restoration all go to FPL, not the city. Water and sewer are different: most of Weston is served through the city’s Indian Trace Development District, and Bonaventure through the City of Sunrise.

Traffic signals out
Report a traffic signal outage on a city road through the city’s report page, which lists “Traffic Signal Outage,” or call Public Works at 954-385-2600.
Downed lines and storm safety
From Broward County’s hurricane guide:
- Treat every downed power line as if it is live. If a line is sparking or arcing, call 911.
- Walk carefully and stay out of standing water, which can hide downed lines.
- Do not go out after dark, when you may not see a line that is still energized.
- Do not drive unless it is an emergency; traffic lights may be out.
- Do not trim trees or plants growing on or near power lines yourself; only trained professionals should work near them. FPL’s tree guidelines are at FPL.com/Reliability.
Water and sewer during an outage
Weston buys its water from the City of Sunrise Utilities Department, which opens and bills the accounts. Who fixes a problem depends on where you live, according to the city’s water and sewer utility page:
| Area | Who to call | Weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. | After hours and weekends |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bonaventure | City of Sunrise | 954-746-3232 | 954-888-6087 |
| All other areas of Weston | Indian Trace Development District (Weston Public Works) | 954-385-2600 | 954-385-2600 |
Billing questions for everyone go to the City of Sunrise, 954-746-3232. Boil water notices are among the alerts ALERT Weston sends.
Before a storm
- Register for ALERT Weston and save 954-385-2000 as a contact.
- Portable generators of 10,000 running watts or less are exempt from Florida sales tax all year. See our hurricane prep guide.
- If someone in your home depends on electric medical equipment, consider the county’s special needs shelter registry.
Running a generator safely
From the federal government’s Ready.gov power outage guide:
- Use a generator only outdoors, and keep it and its fuel at least 20 feet from windows, doors and attached garages.
- Install carbon monoxide detectors with battery backup in central locations on every level of your home. Carbon monoxide has no smell.
- Keep the generator dry and protected from rain or flooding; touching a wet generator or anything plugged into it can cause a shock.
An emergency generator installed at a home needs a building permit in Weston; see building permits.
Complaints about service
If you cannot resolve a problem with FPL, the Florida Public Service Commission, which regulates investor-owned utilities, takes utility complaints online.
Starting or moving service
New residents start electric service with FPL and water service with the City of Sunrise; see our moving to Weston guide.
