Two Weston commissioners step down when Tuesday's winners for Seats 3 and 4 are sworn in Nov. 16. Byron Jaffe helped found the city; Mary Molina-Macfie served 8 years.
Updated Nov. 4: Patricia C. Bernardini won Seat 3 with 14,594 votes (67.67%) to 6,971 for German Melo, and Alfredo Ortega won Seat 4 with 11,053 votes (51.59%) to 10,373 for Jaime A. Herrero, in the Supervisor of Elections’ unofficial results, with some mail ballots still to count. See our results story.
Two of Weston’s five City Commission members will leave office this month. Commissioners Byron L. Jaffe and Mary Molina-Macfie hold Seats 3 and 4, the two seats on Tuesday’s ballot. Neither is a candidate.
The city marked their departure in a tribute on its news page. It says Oct. 12 was their final City Commission meeting. Both remain sitting commissioners until the newly elected members are sworn in on Monday, Nov. 16.
Who is running to replace them
The races are nonpartisan, and every Weston voter can vote in both. The Broward County Supervisor of Elections’ candidate list (PDF) shows:

Byron L. Jaffe, Seat 3
Jaffe has lived in Weston since 1990, the city said. He took part in the residents’ effort that led to Weston’s incorporation in 1996. Before holding office he:
- served as president of the Hibiscus Island Maintenance Association
- was a director of the Weston Homeowners Association
- co-founded and co-chaired Weston’s Fourth of July events
He won Seat 3 in a March 2017 special election to finish an unexpired term. Voters elected him to a full term in November 2018 and returned him for a second four-year term in 2022.
Outside the city, the tribute says, he served with the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization, which steers transportation funding across the county. He also sat on the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Federal Noise Study Commission. He flew as a commercial airline pilot from 1985 and retired from aviation in 2025 as a captain based at Miami International Airport.
Mary Molina-Macfie, Seat 4
Molina-Macfie has lived in Weston since 1991. The city said her advocacy began with her own children’s health problems linked to indoor air quality in their schools. She pressed the Broward County School Board on mold and air quality, and the city credits that work with helping bring in mold remediation protocols and indoor air quality policies across the district.
She was elected to Seat 4 in November 2018. According to the city, during her time in office she:
- founded Veterans of Weston
- organized the city’s first municipal food distributions
- started Commissioner’s Corner, one-on-one sessions with residents
- began the city’s first Coffee with a Cop for community association board members
In 2021, the Broward County Commission on the Status of Women named her one of 15 Broward women honored under the theme “Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced.”
The two served together on the commission from November 2018, under different mayors and alongside different colleagues, the city said.
